Founders’ Day 2021

The Rondebosch Boys’ High School, 124th Year Anniversary, was celebrated on Thursday 11 March 2021.  To mark this momentous occasion a special assembly was held in the Memorial Hall. To open the day’s proceedings, Alex White (Grade 12) shared a meaningful and well-presented reading.

Mike Probyn – Old Boys’ Union Chairman, presented the ‘Dad’ Mason Award in recognition of the remarkable work undertaken over several years by the Transkei Outreach Project which has helped two schools’ matrics significantly improve their examination results.   The Award is made to a Rondebosch person or group who offered their time and expertise unreservedly to causes other than their own. The values espoused are those relating to selflessness, humility and service.

For many South Africans an education with a matric certificate is a critical step to pulling themselves out of poverty. This year’s Mason Award was made in honour and appreciation of The Transkei Outreach Project and in particular Mr Rowan Harmuth, Ms Marion Wasdell and Ms Chantal Rens and the numerous people who over a period of about 8 years have made a huge difference to the lives of those less fortunate than us.  Rondebosch boys (and recently also girls from surrounding schools) tutor during the mid-year school holiday Physical Sciences, Biology, Maths, Maths Literacy and Accounting.  The aim is not just to increase the pass rate, but to improve each pupil’s individual marks with the goal of getting a Bachelors pass that will allow them to enter university

Besides the obvious academic benefits, this Programme provides an opportunity for young South Africans of different languages and cultures to interaction, get to know each other and to learn from one another.  Friendships and strong bonds have developed between the Isolomozi and Tyali Schools’ pupils and their visitors from Cape Town.

In addition the programme looks for ways to support the community such as by providing computers, books, stationery, clothing and sports kit and providing other forms of support.  Embodying the words in our school song of “Spreading a boundless charity” those involved with this programme have unreservedly given so much of their time and expertise. It is therefore fitting that the Rondebosch Old Boys’ Union’s 2021 Dad Mason Award was made to the Transkei Outreach Programme, and its leaders Mr Rowan Harmuth, Ms Marion Wasdell and Ms Chantal Rens.
