Clubs and Societies

The Ballroom Dancing club creates an opportunity for the Rondebosch Boys to gather with some of the neighbouring girls' schools to socialize, have fun and learn how to dance. All students start at a beginner level, meaning that there is no need to worry about having "two left feet". Our club offers a wide range of Ballroom and Latin dances, such as the Waltz, Tango and Mambo, as well as Line Dancing and the occasional Sokkie. At the end of the year, the students' dancing skills are put on display at a performance known as the Ballroom Showcase.

The Boxing Society teaches the fundamentals of boxing to the learners of Rondebosch. Our core pillars revolve around discipline, hard work and encouragement. We aim to teach boxing in a safe environment, allowing for individuals at differing skill levels to push themselves, helping them to achieve the goals they have set out for themselves. Practices involve Technical training, Bag and Pad work, functional fitness and strength training. 

The Culinary Society celebrates a passion for food and the art of cooking, as well as providing an opportunity for boys to learn some essential life skills. Regular sessions are held after school in the tuck shop, where the boys learn to cook (and enjoy eating) a variety of culinary delights. The boys learn good basics such as lasagne, chicken wraps and chocolate brownies; explore the cuisine of different cultures; and stretch themselves with dishes such as pot stickers, butter chicken curry and gnocchi. 

Debating improves a student's ability to develop logical and convincing arguments whilst instilling confidence in public speaking, but above all, it's about engaging with one another and having fun. The Debating Society participates in the National Debating League at both junior and senior levels, and also attends workshops and friendly competitions with schools from the surrounding area.

Being a Hockey Official gives you the thrill of being part of the game on the pitch and not from the stands. As an umpire, you are right by the ball, making quick decisions and learning the rules from the inside out - a genuine skill that earns you formal recognition and accredited training. You progress through different coloured shirts as your experience grows, and can eventually umpire at club level or Western Province Hockey Union level. At the Tech Table, you are front and centre of every match, managing the clock, the score, and player substitutions, and even holding the authority to stop play in an emergency. Whether or not you play hockey currently, working the Tech Table gives you an exciting and rewarding way to learn the game deeply and give back to the school. Years of service in both aspects allow you to receive service colours that contribute to your future university applications.

The Jewish Society exists to create a sense of belonging for Jewish learners by offering a supportive community, meaningful connection, and opportunities to explore Jewish culture and identity at their own pace. It’s a welcoming and inclusive space where learners can connect, share experiences, and build friendships within our broader school community. The Society meets regularly on Fridays to share challah together and engage in interesting discussions or talks on topics relevant to Jewish life, heritage, and contemporary issues. From time to time, external speakers and Old Boys join us to share their perspectives and experiences. Meetings provide a relaxed environment for connection and conversation. Open to all Jewish learners, regardless of background or level of observance, and to any learners who are interested in learning more about Jewish culture and community..

The First Aid Society trains members to a high standard — fully funded by the school — equipping them to handle a wide range of medical situations. Qualified first aiders become part of a professional multidisciplinary team, gaining hands-on experience providing pitch-side support across sports including rugby, hockey, and football, working alongside doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, and paramedics. The society also supports students during school hours, and many members go on to pursue careers in the medical field.

Fencing is certainly something rather different to most sporting activities, and offers students a physically challenging yet stimulating alternative that can make a meaningful contribution to the boys' school experience. We turn the romance of “sword-fighting” into all the potential that sport presents. Our fencers are assured to have a varied experience throughout the year, as we explore various aspects of the “sport of the sword”. The weekly program is based on a syllabus, but for students aiming to progress competitively, there is an additional system of ranks and grades forming the basis of the squad training system.

The Muslim Students Association has grown from strength to strength each year. We have a broad focus from catering to our Muslim learners’ needs, to broadening their knowledge and helping them grow into leaders. We encourage our members to show active participation by being and to be more socially aware citizens who promote unity and develop equitable solutions to societal problems.

The Outreach Society gives RBHS boys a platform to serve their community through a variety of initiatives, including clothing, stationery, and Christmas hamper drives, fundraisers like the Cyclathon and Spur Shadow Shifts, and events such as Christmas parties and marathon water stations. Committee members develop leadership, organisational, and teamwork skills, while the flexible structure allows any boy to sign up for individual activities without a long-term commitment.

The RCU is a vibrant, Christ-centered community where students gather to explore faith and support one another. We host lively break-time meetings and an annual camp in partnership with other local schools, offering a warm space for fellowship, prayer, and growth. Whether you are looking for a spiritual home or are simply curious about the Gospel, everyone is welcome to join us as we build bridges and share God's love.

Boys have the opportunity to learn both practical and technical skills whilst serving the school. The chosen crew has access to the sound and lighting room and is trained throughout a four-year course. The boys assist with any production or technical activity at a variety of exciting school events such as drama productions, music concerts, special assemblies, sporting events and Cabaret.
